The monthly meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Women's-' Christian Temperance Union was held 1 in the Baring Square Schoolroom yesterday afternoon, Mrs W. H. Robinson' presided. , Letters of sympathy were directed" to* be sent to members who were sick. The Waimate Union wrote notifyingthe removal of a member to-Ashburtom. The Hon. W. Nosworthy wrote acknowledging the letter from theUnion that suggested amended legislation in the interests of women, ancf promising that the matter would receive due consideration.

The South Canterbury District: Union wrote stating that a meeting* of the executive would be held* in Timaru next Monday, and requestingthe appointment of a representative. The" "Monthly iNews of the New Zealand Alliance was received? from the area organiser, but was Relt? over for discussion.

Mrs E. M. Beg? was appointed' collector for the Union in connection with donations to the A. and" P. and" Winter Show prize funds. Mesdames H. Stone 1 and A. Brown : were elected delegates 1 to the District / Convention} which: meets : in Ntew Brighton on September 14', 15", and 26. Mrs F. Hocking and Miss N. Watson were appointed substitutes.. Mrs Robinson submitted a report of the executive meeting held in Timaru on July 12. The progress made by the recently-formed " Y™' branches in South Canterbury was very gratifying. An interesting report of a visit paitf' recentlv to the Sydnev branches of the W.C.T.U. by Mrs T." Young was also given. Special reference was made to the appeal made to the New South Wales Government to introduce legislation which, would have the effect of closing liquor bars at 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and thus bring the sale of liquor into line with the weekly half-holiday in other businesses. It was decided* that a letter of thanks be forwarded to Mrs Young, who Was now in Christchurch, for the interesting account of her trip. Tea was served, and the . gathering dispersed.
