MAINTAINING HIGHWAYS
CRITICJSM OF THE BOARD.
DISSATISFACTION IN OTAGO. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, This Day. General dissatisfaction with the manner in which the provisions of the Main Highways Act are being applied in Otago districts was expressed at a conference yesterday comprising delegates from all County Councils hi the province, excepting Vincent, the Otago; Expansion League and the Otago Motors Club. The conference criticised many features of the Board's administration and! discussed fully the question of. the: amount of credit to the South Island.in! the Board's fund, as well as relations between County Councils and other. bodies under the Act. The following resolutions were carried "That this meeting is in favour ofl one representative from borough councils being .appointed to the district councils."
"That the Main Highways' Board be asked to grant a subsidy of £2 for £l, in place of the present £1 for\£l subsidy for the construction and maintetH ance of highways." "That the Board be asked to consider purchasing road-making machinery in< the best markets for disposal to local bodies ah cost price, preference to be given to British manufacturers."
"That the provisions of the Act be altered so that the subsidy for the maintenance of bridges on main iigh.ways be not less than £2 for £l." A further motion, "That, in the opinion of the conference, the maintenance of main highways should be a charge on the general rates," was not put, as many delegates, though favouring it, were tied by the bodies th»y\ represented. , ]
