DUNEDIN EXHIBITION

THE CANTERBURY COURT. ASHBURTON REPRESENTATION. CHRISTCHURCH, This DqyThe Canterbury Provincial Committee of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition met yesterday .niternoon, Mr W. Machin presiding. Mr F. W. Seldon (president of the Ashburton Chamber of Commerce) was present as representative of the local committee.

Mr A. A. McKellar _ reported that the : amount asked for from the North •Canterbury local bodies was £3125 16s, and the amount promised was £1643 6s.' In addition there Avas the £6OO Ashburton quota and £IOOO South Canterbury quota, giving a total of £3243 6s. Local bodies, representing ,a total of £1195 Bs, had still to be waited on. This latter sum with the £3243 6s gave a total of £4438 14s.

The chairman said that the finance would not become available until all 'had been promised. It was possible for them to encounter failure, but he did not think -that was probable. Mr H. S. E. Turner reported that the freezing eompanies were prepared to lend the necessary carcases and meat for the 'freezing exhibit provided they were satisfied the cabinet was suitable and that it would not be necessary for the carcases to be changed too often. The freezing companies would give the meat anonymously; the exhibit would be purely one of Canterbury- lamb, and not an exhibit by any particular freezing companies. The chairman said the main question was one of the cost of the cabinet for the display, which would be about £SOO.

It was decided to proceed with the securing of the cabinet, the assistance of the Meat Board to be asked for in meeting the cost of the cabinet. On Bfthal'f of the Grain, Seeds, and Flour Committee report, Mr J. D. Hall said that a. plan had been drawn up by which an exhibit of cereals and grass seeds could easily be placed in the space Of 500 feet. There would also be an exhibit of bread. Mr Seldon (Ashburton) said that 500 feet of space would be sufficient for Ashburton*s requirements. His committee was ready to supplement Canterbury's exhibit 'df grain. The chairman said he considered Ashburton would include its grain exhibit in the Canterbury exhibition. He thought it would be better to have one big exliibit than two separate ones.

Mr Seldon said that Ashburton did not wish to lose its preferred to have its own grain exhibit. Mr G. H. Holford suggested that if the matter was left over a solution might be found in having one big exhibit for Canterbury and another one for Ashburton. Mr Norton Francis thought that a big exhibit might be suitably' labelled to show the representation of each district. By that 'means 'Ashburton's identity would not be lost. Mr W. H. Nicholson, on behalf of the Wool Committee, said the work of collecting the fleeces was already in hand. There would be an adequate display of Canterbury wool.

The chairman said there* had been some trouble over the dairy exhibit. However, they were not despairing, and it was hoped to secure a quantity of butter. It was decided that the butter should be exhibited in the meat case.
