TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," July 25, 1900.) Dromore Literary and Debating Society.—A meeting of this Society was well attended. Papers were read by Mrs Maxwell,on "Beauty," and by Miss Cameron on "Intellect." A discussion followed, and then a vote was taken as to whether beauty or intellect were the better gift to possess. Smith, William Muir, and Sampson ; emergencies—F. .Gluyas, Garbett, and Gollens. Rifles v. Guards.—A friendly Rugby match was played on the Domain yesterday between teams from the Ashburton Rifles and the Ashburton Guards. The game resulted: Guards 8, Rifles 0. R. Shearman and A. Gates obtained tries, one of which F. Clark converted. The following were prominent in play: For the Guards: F. Smith, S. Dixon, G. Woods, A. Cates, Boyle, and F. Clark; for the Rifles: B. Wilson, J. Pritchard, H. Heffbrd, and M. Baker. Mr Robiiliard was referee.
