EARTHQUAKE SHOCK.
CHRISTCHURCH EXPERIENCE. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Christchurch residents were rudely disturbed at 10.32 last night, when a distinct "shake" was experienced. Ine shock was fairly severe, and suspended objects swayed for a considerable time. The direction was from east to west. Several patrons of the Theatre Royal were scared by the earthquake, which was more prononunced in the gallery, and a number left the building. Others state they experienced a sea-sick A slight shock of earthquake w*<= felt at Sumner last night at 9.38. < The earthquake was felt at Kaiapoi about 10.35 p.m. It was short but severe. FELT ON THE WEST COAST. TWO SHOCKS AT WESTPORT. GREYMOUTH, April 30. An earthquake lasting about a dozen seconds was felt here to-night at 10.0\<2. The direction apparently was east to west. The tremors were very even, none being sharp. WESTPORT, April 30. Two severe earthquake shocks in quick succession occurred at 10.33 tonight. Some of the big buildings fairly rattled with the quakes, and members of the post and telegraph staff made a hasty exit from the building and were reluctant to return until they were sure the shakes were over. SLIGHT SHOCK IN ASHBURTON. A slight earthquake was felt in Ashburton at about 10.35 p.m. yesterday. The shock lasted only a few seconds, but was of sufficient strength to cause some houses and buildings to creak. In at least one house the electric light bulbs, having the light switched oft, nickered up again for a moment.
