GOVERNMENT PLANS
THE KING'S FORECAST.
SINGAPORE AND PREFERENCE.
UNEMPLOYED AND PENSIONS. (Per Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, December 9. The King's Speech states that the Government proposed to proceed with , the plans already made for enlarging the naval base at Singapore. His Majesty says he has no doubt the happy result or the Prince of Wales' previous visits to the Dominions will be repeated in South Africa during the Spring of 1925. The Prince of Wales will visit Argentine in 1925 in response to an invitation from the President and Government. The Imperial and the Dominion Governments have begun to examine the Disarmament Protocol and are unable to recommend the consideration of the recent Anglo-Russian Treaties. Normal intercourse between the two countries is possible by a strict fulfilment of the conditions of friendly international intercourse, which has been repeatedly submitted to the Soviet Government. The Government's guiding principle will be the closest co-operation with the Dominions' and Indian Governments. The Government would steadfastly adhere to the policy of encouraging Empire settlement. Mutual trade proposals will be submitted, granting further preference to Empire imports. A Bill will be introduced safeguarding industries. Provision will be made for the alleviation of unemployment and the relief of the housing shortage by the encouragement of new methods. The Minister is enquiring into the possibility of improving old-age pensions and pensioning widowed mothers. Measures will be submitted to encourage the sugar beet industry and provide the marking of imported foodstuffs and to carry out the recommendations of the committee on preservatives and colouring in food. In the House of Commons Mr Baldwin stated that the Government had not yet decided the length of time over which the Singapore works will be spread, but was communicating with the Dominions in regard to the question of contributions. Mr Amery gave notice of the introduction of a Bill carrying out the Economic Conference s proposals.
