LOOKING BACK

‘ TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” July 28 1899.) South Rakaia School. Mr G. H. White, for ten years master of the Gust Public School, has been selected for appointment as headmaster at South Rakaia. . . Too Much of It.—A singular fact m connection with the examination of candidates for admission to the oolice force during recent months is that many of the best men have had to be rejected on account of the discovery that they were suffering from varicose veins, brought on, so Commissioner Tunbridge thinks, by excessive indulgence in athletics. . Sir Robert Stout.—The new Chief Justice is determined that the work of the Supreme Court must not be retarded. He said on Wednesday (states the “Post”) that members of the Bar must understand that he was not going to allow cases to be put off from time to time on the plea that counsel was engaged elsewhere. In the event of illness, of course, the case would be different, but otherwise, if counsel were not ready, he would strike their cases off the list, as he had already struck off three. Tinwald Town Board.—There were present at the monthly meeting of the Tinwald Town Board: Messrs C. Doherty (chairman), T. Sealy, M. Lagan,' J. M. Hampton, and W. Huston. Hockey.—The following will represent the Ashburton Hockey Club in the match against Rakaia in the Domain: —H. Millichamp, F. Clark, F. Watt, F. Gale, R. Millar, E. Marsden, J. Smith, A. Silcock, W. Smith, F. Potter, and D. Stock. Emergencies : C. Willis, L. F. Andrewes. Mayfield Telephone Office. —From a statement of the revenue and expenditure of the Mayfield telephone office, supplied to Mr E. G. Wright, M.H.R., by the Secretary of Telegraphs, Mr W. Gray, is gathered the fact that the Government has run the telephone to Mayfield at a" loss of £2O for the year ended June 30, 1899.
