EARTHQUAKE AND FLOOD.
DELHI, July 25. The horrors of the flood disaster in Madras were added to by an earthquake in the hilly region, which caused heavy damage to communications.
INTER-EMPIRE TRADE.
(Received This Day, 9.49 a.m.) LONDON, July 25. As a sequel to the recent Chambers of Commerce Conference a meeting of Empire business men elected a committee to organise a conference in September or October for the purpose of interchanging information and stimulating inter-Empire trade. At the Commercial Travellers' Conference Mr Coysh complained that the taxation of British travellers in the Dominions hindered trade, and should be removed. Mr Davies initiated a discussion on Empire Trade. Mr Manfcon (New Zealand) urged the adoption of the slogan, "Trade within j the Empire." . Mr Perry, Canadian president, believed Canada's preference would shortly be abolished if Britain was not responsive. The Conference adopted a resolution pledging its support to trade within the Empire.
BATTLEFIELD MEMORIALS. (Received This Day, 9.10 a.m.) v LONDON, July 25. The King of the Belgians will unveil the New Zealand battle memorial at Messines on August 1. Sir James Allen unveils the Gravenstafel memorial on August 2.
AN ITALIAN FLIGHT. (Received This Dav,12.30 p.m.). ROME, July 25. Tire Italian aviator, Locatelh, left this morning for London. He is intending to make an attempt at a trans-Atlantic flight to New York.
CHINA FAMINE RELIEF. (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) PEKIN, July 20. The Famine Commission has addressed a resolution to the Government and diplomats stating that it is organising a national relief campaign but that the Government funds ißionld also be made available. It proposes a surtax, on maritime Customs. The funds are being administered by a joint committee representing Cabinet and the Diplomats? Commission, and the latter recommends that the funds should be expended on the loan basis, in that manner establishing a revolving fund which may be devoted to flood and famine prevention when the present emergency is past. Cabinet resolved in favour of imposing for six months railway, telegraph, .postal, and navi.ration surtaxes to aid sufferers following on the lines of the 1920 famine surtax. The question of navigation was referred to Dr. Shui Wu Chu for consideration. It is understood the diplomats will be approached regarding the Customs surtax, which the Government also intends, .to impose.
