The personnel of the Ashburton policestaff will undergo a slight -change early' next week. Constable Excell will: leave for Kaitangata, and ConstablePaul, of Christchurch, has been appointed to fill the vacancy at Ashburton.
Messrs J. F. Arnold and Lightfoot, in charge of the Labour Department in the South Canterbury and Otage districts respectively, were throujgh. passengers for the south by this morning's express. The two officers attended the Public Service Conference at Wellington.
Mr and Mrs W. S. Strange (Tinwald) have already been to the' Continent (writes a London correspondent).•- Theyspent a month visiting Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Italy, and France, and had a very pleasant trip. At oressent they are in London, and, making a general tour cf the United' Kingdom, they will leave for NewYork towards the end of September. A few weeks will be spent in tbeUnited States and Canada, and the return journey will be made from Vancouver.
