THE 400 METRES RACE.
CHARLTON TO BE IN FINAL.

(Per Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.5 a.m.) PARIS, July 17. In the swimming events, 400 metres' first semi-final, Weismuller was first, Charlton second, and Smith (America) third. Time, 5.13 3-5. Neither Weismuller nor Charlton extended himself.
The second semi-final resulted:—■ Arne Borg 1, Ake Borg 2. Hatfield (Britain) 3. Time, 5.21 23>. Beaurepaire was a non-starter. The final is to be swum to-morrow afternoon. The springboard diving final was won by White (America). Eye (Australia) was placed fifth. No importance was attached to today's meeting of Weismuller and Charlton Weismuller made the pace and left Charlton 20 metres behind at 300 metres. Thereafter he slowed down. Charlton was swimming his easiest and finished well ahead of Smith. In the second semi-final Borg was not troubled and swam with the greatest ease. The American, Brewes, withdrew. Tomorrow's final is regarded as-one of the greatest races in the history of swimming. Three of the fastest swimmers in the world, holding between them every record up to one mile, are competing. All are at the top of their form, and it is impossible to forecast the winner. (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) Sculling.—Final : Beresford (Britain) 1 Gilmore (America) 2, Schneider (Switzerland) 3. Bull (Australia) retired after covering three-quarters of the course. __ Tennis.—Fourth round : McKane beat Jessup 6-2, 6-0. Fifth round: Richards (America) beat Lacoste. France) 8-6, 4-6, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
