TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

Water ton.—A very successful meeting of the Clearbrook Lodge, 1.0.G.T. was held in the Library Hall on Wednesday night. The Lodge was opened in due form by Bro, J. Watson, C.T., after which the meeting was opened to the public, and a very good programme was submitted. Each item was given in a creditable manner, and met with well-merited applause from an attentive and appreciative audience. The following contributed to the evening’s enjoyment:—Songs by Misses Watson, Dakers, Ilia Taylor, and Mrs Lowe and Mrs Jones, and Messrs Dakers, McConnell, Shearer and Jones. Headings by Messrs Gilmour and Watson, and recitations by Messrs Henry Wills, S. Crosson, H. Thomas, and J. Dakers. On the motion of Mr T. Taylor a hearty .vote of thanks was accorded to all who had contributed towards the evening’s entertainment. Personal.—Mr W. Digby Miller, late of the Ashburton and . Auckland branches of the Bank of Australasia, has accepted a position on the staff of the Wairarapa Frmers’ Co.op. Association.
Ball at Methven.—One of the most enjoyable balls of the season was given by Mrs J. Nee, of Methven, as the wind-up of the huntseason for that district, and was held in the Methven schoolroom on Thursday night last, about 50 couples being present. The music, which was excellent, was supplied by Mr Walker, of Lauriston, ably assisted by Miss Batton and Messrs Curtis and Middleton. The supper was all that could be desired, and was in the hands of Mesdames Powell and Burrows. Mr Trumper was a most efficient M.C. fjjongs were sung by Messrs Claridge, Muschamp,. Knight, Alington, and Siev Among those present were Mrs J. Nee, cream bodice and dark skirt; Mrs Alington, in a pretty pink costume ; Mrs Anderson, in cream and black; Mrs Shann, brown silk and lace; Mrs Knight, in black; Mrs Morgan also wore black; Misses Patton (3) in simple White dresses, with crimson ribbons (the Hunt colours); Miss Alexander, in blue bodice and dark skirt; Miss Batton, in crimson silk and cream lace; Miss Powell wore white with crimson ribbons; Misses Hibbs (2) in cream bodices and dark skirts, also relieved with crimson; Miss Stone, in green; Miss Anderson, in blue bodice and dark shirt; Misses Scott (2), in tartan bodices and dark skirt.s; besides many more, too numerous to mention. Among the gentlemen were Messrs Claridge, Curtis (2), Patton, Dart, Alington, Morgan, Baxter (3), Cranfield, Goodwin, Trumper, Dobson, Stewart, Sievwright, Nee (2), Blackley, Middleton, Knight, Mcßae, F. Baker, Walker, Chambers, Captain Thackeray and many more. Dancing was kept up till the small hours of the morning. Three cheers and many thanks were given to Mrs Nee for the enjoyable time that had been spent, and after singing with vigour “Auld Lang Syne” the company dispersed.
