Replying to the editor of . the “Ashburton Guardian,” the District Traffic Manager, writing from Christchurch, says:—‘ ‘ln reply to your letter of ; the 18th June, with reference to accidents on the Mt. Somers Branch line, I have to advise you that only two derailments to trains have occurred on the Mt. Somers Branch line during the past twelve months; and that there was no connection as regards their causes. _ , “The derailment on 9th February, 1923, could not he definitely traced to any specific cause, the damage resulting therefrom destroying the evidence necessary to arrive at a conclusion. “The derailment on 15th ultimo was due to the failure of the railway staff to couple the Westinghouge brake .con-: nection throughout the whole train.
