RIFLE SHOOTING. MILLS WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. CLARK AS RUNNER-UP. ' (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, This Day. At the Otago Rifle Association’s meeting, the Otago match was won by Rifleman Mills (Kiwi), 66, who also -won. the Championship with an aggregate of 288. Rifleman Clark, Ashburton, was second with 281, _ Rifleman Bradshaw, Timaru, third, with 277. Champion Teams: —Kiwi No. 1 1396, Dunedin No. 2 1328, Ashburton 1327, Kiwi No. 2 1326, Timaru 1311, Dunedin No. 1 1308, Oamaru No. 1 1275.
RULES OF RUGBY. REFEREES IN CONFERENCE. SOME DEFINITIONS. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The following rulings were confirmed by the New Zealand Referees’ Conference' : (1) That a player’s right of appeal be taken away altogether, and the referee should blow his whitsle for every breach without waiting for an appeal. (2) In the case of players ordered off, the referees should be sure of their grounds, but should make reports to the unions /as short as possible, and decline to be cross-examin-ed on the main points of the case. (5) That the referee should not whistle when the offending (?) side gains an advantage. (6) That the ball is not fairly in the scrum until it has passed a player on each side.
(7) The scrum ceases to be a scrum when the portion of it containing the ball crosses a goal line. (8) That where a player in touch falls on the ball over the goal-line a try be allowed. (9) The definitions “scram” and “mark” were referred for Referees’ Associations’ consideration.
