POSITION IN SYDNEY. WHANGAPE’S MEN BIPRISONED. (Per Press Association, Copyright.) " SYDNEY, December 14. Fourteen members of the; > crew of the Whangape refused to obey the .commands of the master and were sentenced to 24 hours’ imprisonment. The vessel, so far, has not sailed. (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Whangape was manned by a volunteer crew and is expected to sail to-night. A,.volunteer crew has also been secured for the Ngatoro, at Newcastle, sailing for Y/ellington to-day. <-7 MELBOURNE, This Day. ' Mr Justice Powers, in the Federal Court, informed the Seamen’s Union that they would be given till Wednesday to disprove that vessels were beI ing held up despite the owners’ desire Ito pay the award rates. The union ! must give an undertaking to assist in ! carrying out the terms of the award and the men must decide either on arbitration or direct action.
SEAMEN "BEFORE COURT. PARTIES TO A STRIKE. AIAGISTRATE RECORDS CONVICTION. WELLINGTON, This Day. Thirty-six eases against seamen alleged to have been parties to a strike were called before Mr E. Page, S.M. Counsel for the defendants said it was not intended to appeal against the convictions previously entered against two men, who were each fined ’£2 last week. He further stated that the men were prepared to accept the evidence then given as applying to themselves. Judgment was given for the plaintiff in each case and penalties of £2 and costs imposed.
