Friday that Sir Joseph Ward, Lady Ward, and Mr Pat Ward were leaving : San Francisco last Saturday morning by the Tahiti for Wellington. The message atated that the party were very well; , Captain E. V. D. Day (Timaru), who has been on furlough m England, is returning to India this week. During the war ne saw service on the frontier and m Persia. He has since joined the Colonial Civil Service, and will be stationed m Malay. Captain Day was formerly stationed m Ashburton, and is a son of Mr V. G. Day, S.M. The Minister for Justice announced yesterday the retirement, after 37 years' public service, of Mr C. B. Jordan, Under-Secretary of Justice and Native Affairs. Entering the Justice Department as a cadet m January, 1885, Mr Jordan succeeded Mr F. Waldegrave as chief clerk m. 1896, and. again as Under-Secretary of ' Justice m 1912. He was appointed Under-Secretary of Native Affairs m. 1916, and Secretary of the Cook Islands Department. Mr Jordan was born m Wellington m 1865. The (Minister stated that the Public Service was losing the services of a conscientious officer, whose reliability and efficiency m the discharge of his dutieswere generally admitted. ' A Press Association telegram fronv Wellington states that Archbishop Bartholomew Cattaneo, Apostolic delegate of the Roman Catholic Church m Australasia, arrived by the Marama # on his first official visit to the Dominion. He is accompanied by Archbishop Redwood, Bishop White, of Dunedin, and his secretary. He was met at the wharf by a large body of clergy and laity. At the Basilica last night he was tendered a canonical reception, and at the close of an impressive service delivered the Apostolic Blessing. Monsignor Cattaneo, who has been m Australia for four years, leaves on Wednesday evening for Dunedin.
