WORK OF THE COMMISSIONER.

WELLINGTON, September 7. The Tariff Commission's work has been completed, and the new tariff, subject to its approval by Cabinet, is now ready for presentation to Parliament as soon as the House is ready to receive it. No information as to the proposals can be made publio before the Bill is presented, as this miga^ lead to a rush of goods from bond ■m order to escape any higher duties. When the Bill is presented to Parliament, it comes into operation at once, but should any of the duties be altered m the passage of the Bill through the House, importers are entitled to a refund of any extra amount which they haye paid. No indication has yet been given even of the underlying principles which will be embodied m the tariff, beyond the statement of the Prime Minister that the tariff which he would wish to see adopted t was an extension of the principle of Imperial preference. So far as is known at present^ the Prime Minister will adhere his original intention to take charge himself of the Tariff ©ill m the House of Representatives.
