BURNSIDE.
(Per Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, April 28. The outstanding feature of the Burnside sales to-day was the poor quality of sheep offered. Wethers appear to be diminishing in quantity every week. In consequence, prices ior this class were firmer to-day. Supplies in other fat stock departments were ample for requirements, but, generally speaking, the quality was disappointing. . Sheep—There was a. medium yarding, numbering 2706 head. The quality was very indifferent, very few prime sheep being forward. No extra prime heavyweight wethers were offered. For all inferior sheep prices were 1 firmer, while for prime wethers prices were from Is to Is 6d higher than those which ruled at last week's sales. Prime wethers made from 44s to 48s 6d; medium 35s to 435; light and unfinished kinds from 35s upwards. Prime ewes brought from 38s 3d to 45s 9d; medium 33s to 375; light and aged from 22s upwards. i(lat lambs—There was a small yarding, a total of 613 head being offered. The quality on the whole was fair. On account of the small yarding, prices were firmer by Is to Is 6d per head. Values ranged from 20s to 37s per head.
Fat cattle—There was a fair yarding, numbering 184 head of medium quality. At . the commencement of the sale there was a good demand for all prime cattle at an advance of 10s per head on last week's rates. Prime bullocks brought from £19 to £24 12s 6d; medium £16 10s to £18 10s; light and unfinished kinds from £14 10s upwards. Prime heifers brought from £16 to £17 10s; medium £13 to £14; light and aged from £9 upwards. . '•> Store cattle—There was a smaller yarding than usual, with-a sprinkling of cows suitable for canning purposes. For this class prices were on a par with late rates, but for young and backward cattle, which comprised the bulk of- the yarding, competition was slack and prices barely maintained late rates.
Pigs—There was a good yarding. Very < few. baconers were forward, the bulk of the yarding consisting of porkers and small pigs. Prices realised were equal to late rates. Best baconers brought from lOd to lid per lb, and best porkers from lOid to ll^d per lb.
