RAKAIA.

A meeting of representatives of tho three Friendly Societies in Rakaia arid the School Committee ■ was held in the Library to consider the balance-sheet of the late picnic to Timaru. The accounts showed that'there was a credit balance in hand of £11 15s, and it was directed that this should be -placed in the bank", making, with the sum already to the committee's credit, a sum of £25 14s. The Rakaia -Miniature Rifle Club held its opening ball in the Town Hall on Friday evening. 'An energetic committee had dene a great deal of work in' preparing' the hall, which was beautifully decorated and furnished, for the occasion. The function was *in every way a success, and dancing was kept up till about 2 p..m. The music was provided by Hosken's Band, and Messrs A. Oliver and A. Sha~nnon acted as M.C.'s. The-funds of the club will benefit to the extent of about £7 10s. On Saturday a large party of bowlers from Ashburton visited the Rakaia green, and took part in a progressive bowling tournament with the local players. All the available rinks were fully occupied, and a good time was spent. Unfortunately, owing to failing light, only four out of the six games: in the set could be played. The visit was very much appreciated by the Rakaia players, and the. hope was expressed that Ashburton would soon fall into line with the Saturday half-holi-day and enable more visits between the club's to be made. _ The Rakaia Club intends to close its green this week.

Although- there have been jnany cases of >_evere colds in the Rakaia district, and a few cases of mild influenza, still

there has been no appearance of the severer form of the disease. The attendance at the local school has not been much affected. An - indication of the scarcity of houses in Rakaia is the fact that there are three families living at one of the hotels because no other dwelling is available.
