The Rome correspondent of the "Daily Chronicle" states that an Italian inventor has submitted to. the State Railways Department a new system' for compressing air, enabling its storage in huge tanks and transference to locomotives, superseding steam' and electricity. It has added*"advantages in that existing locomotives may be used.

(Received October 31, 11 aim.) NEW YORK, October 28. The steamer City of Muskegon, en-" tering the harbour at Muskegon (Michigan), struck the pier and sank in four minutes. Three passengers and seven of the crew were drowned. The remainder scrambled up on to the pier.
