BUTTER-FAT LEVY.
WELLINGTON, August 29
An inquiry put to the Prime Minister to-day by. Mr Mander was whether he would adjust the butter-fat classification fund by charging the levy to the Consolidated revenue.
Mr Alassey replied that since arriving in Wellington his attention had been called by quite a number of members to this rather difficult matter. He reminded those that the levy arrangement was nfade by representatives of the producers themselves and not by the Government. In the near future he proposed to, place the matter before Cabinet. It was the policy of the Government to encourage production, and no section of producers deserved encouragement more than the butter producers of the He was not able to go into details of any proposals he might make to Cabinet, but he hoped to consult with representatives of the producers and see what could be done.
