MR JOHN PAYNE.

A large number oJ" farmer friends met at Mr Norman Orr's Mayfield homestead ,on Saturday night to farewell Mr John Payne, an bid .residentof the district. Mr "W. G. Gallagher, in a short speech, outlined the progress of the district since the time Mr John Payne and other stout-hearted pioneers took up their holdings there. He then presented Sir Payne with a travelling rug, on behalf oi" the many friends who subscribed. Various toasts were proposed and spoken to, and song, story, and recitation helped to make a merry evening's entertainment. The gathering broke up beforo midnight by cheering Mr and Mrs Norman Orr for so generously placing their beautiful home at the disposal of the party.
