COUNCIL OF WOMEN.

[ A meeting of the Christchurch | branch of the Natioal Council of Women of New Zealand ivas held recently, Miss Henderson presiding. Tlie secretary reported that a letter had been sent to the Hon. J. A. Hanan, Minister of Education, from the Council, protesting against the action of. the Education Department in closing the Te Oranga. Reformatory for Girls. A reply had been received from Mr Hanan, defending the' Department's action, and stating he would be glad to receive a deputation from the Council on the occasion of bis next visit to Christchurch. It was decided that a deputation from the Council, in conjunction with the Society for tlie Protection of Women and Children, wait on Mr Hanan.

A draft of the proposed programme of the forthcoming conference, to be held in. Wellington in August, was read. Mrs Roberts and Miss Lovell Smith were appointed delegates to the conference.

It iwas decided that the Canterbury members of .Parliament be asked whether they would be willing to support a Bill making women eligible for seats in Parliament.

The secretary was instructed to write to the Hon. f. M. Wilford, asking that necessary legislation be introduced to amend the Destitute Persons .Act to

enable a special officer to be appointed to collect dues in maintenance ewes.
