CHARGE OF ASSAULT.

At the Magistrate's Court to-day two brothers, Roy and Victor Smith, were charged with assaulting Police-Ser-geant James Rcid with intent to do him grievous bodily harm In the course of his evidence Sergeant Ileid stated that late on the night of June U he proceeded to the Wanganui East Town Hall, where a Church of England dance was in progress, and on rcachin„ the vicinity he had occasion to remonstrate, with the two-men for using bad language. He was attacked by both men, severely kicked and punched, and as he lay on the grouud one- of the accused tried to throttle him. A brstander intervened, and witness managed to reach his home, where ho collapsed Witness positively identified one of his assailants. •
Medical evidence was _iveu that Serceant Ileid was admitted to the public hospital sufferintr from concussion of the brain: It was eight days before he left tho institution, and he would not be able to resume police duty for several months. Both accused were committed for trial at the Suoremo Court.
