TOWN IMPROVEMENTS.

Sir,—Some time ago some outside ■Council, wrote 'to. th'o Asliib/urton. Borough Council, asking them to co-oper-ate in 'a house".'planning se'teme.' If I remember' rightly the local Council turned it down. , In looking round Ashburton, there aro signs qi some build 7 ings likely to be erected in the not far distant future. It is more than time that no dwelling should bo alloy/ed to be erected other than what would bo conducive to health, sanitation, and have all necessary conveniences, arid built on not less than a quarter acre of land. No more of these single-storey shop tenements should be allowed to be p:!t np' unless the walls are of suffi-r cient thickness to carry a top-storey... Too many of -these bits of places have been erected in the past, which are a drawback to the town. A correspondent in.tlie columns of the "Guardian" recently advocated the erection of a number of houses, to be hznli by the Borough Council, at a cost of £200, each. This money would about build. a doiible-compartment dog kennel, minus conveniences.'
