RAKAIA.
Esmo Burns,. a pupil of tho Mead School, was ■ successful in winning a Junior National Scholarship at the recent examination. Mr E. Brittenden, stationinaster, and Mr C. Ross, postmaster, are enjoying a vacation. The mason bee, very commonly known in. the North Island, where it is rathor troublesome because of its habit of making its clay home in unwelcome places, was recently reported from Waihola. During the past week several have been observed at Rakaia, but it is scarcely likely they will withstand the cold of the coming winter. A good illustration of the rise in prices of commodities was seen recently at the Rakaia station, where a truck of rock-salt arrived, worth £16 per ton. An old settler states that ho had often bought the article for £3 15s per ton.
