MAYFIELD.
A public meeting in connection with, the 01.C.A., convened by Mr W. Gallagher, was held in the Band Hall on Saturday evening. On account of harvesting operations being in full swing there was only a moderate attendance. Mr W. Gallagher occupied the chair, and read a circular dealing with efforts to be made in the Ashburton County to maintain, to increase the benefits, and to enlarge the work of. the V.M.C.A.
The Ashburton Centre strongly advised the direct canvass for money, but several of those present spoke of the sale of produce, etc., as the best means of securing the maximum of funds. The question of joining the Ashburton Centre, or whether. Mayfield should act independently, was also discussed. On account of itlie small representation of the public present, it was decided that the meeting's business be only preliminary, and that another 'meeting be called tit an early date.
