I Enquiries are being made from j teachers m the Ashbiuton district as ! to what support would; be forthcoming I for the «Btabli«hment in 1 Afihburton of I Saturday classes" for teachers, similar to classes now held in Christchurch. If such classes are established, then! ; teachers in schools nearer to Ashburton than Christcliui'ch wilj not be al- j lowed to attend nb the latter place. , The consensus of opinion amongst teachers seems to bo almost entirely in favour of Christchurch as the centre. ■■■ . . .... . ,'■■ At a meeting of the. committee of ; the Rakaia. Bowlijiti :Clvib, the 'que^- | tion of .helping' tlnv Teririif? and- Croquet Club to Jay down a''croquet, lawn was i ! discussed, and it was decided, to offer I the club 'tho use of 15 feet of the bowling green and about 20 feet of additional ground on the north side of the green, with a length of 110 feet, thus providing for'two "lawns. .At a-later I meeting of the Tennis a;:d Croquet Club, the offer was r-onv«v<;J by means of ;i deputation. A vote of thanks was passed to tho Howling Club for the ground, and two members were J appointed to work with the Bowling Committee in carrying out the work, ! the co*st of which will be borne by the j Tennis Club. A team is already scoop- [ ing away the earth to. lower the j ground to the bowling green level. It ' is proposed to sow it down in lawn h grass, and as a, plentiful water supply ! is assured, it is expected that, with | rea*sonable good fortune, the lawns I should be available for play in Febru- ! ary. At tho tennis meeting a. hearty" I vote of thanks was- passed to Mrs C. A. C. Hardy, patron of the club, for her gift of a silver cup. The trophy will be held by the winner of the gentlemen's ladder competition, and must i be won three times, not necessarily in I succession, to become the property of the holder.
