JUDGMENT AGAINST THE

EMPLOYEES

WELLINGTON, June 1

| Reserved judgment was delivered in the Magistrate's Court to-day in the caso Inspector of Awards v. tho Petone Woollen Mills Industrial Union of Workers. Plaintiff claimed £200 as penalty for an offence under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, m that the defendant union, during February and March, instigated workers employed by the Wellington Woollen Company to become parties to an unlawful strike, the workers being bound by an award of tho Arbitration Court. The Magistrate, Mr Riddell, held that, although noticos were given to cease employment, a strike had been proved on the' ground of collusion between tho workers- to cease work. The action of the I 'men 'in leaving their employment in a body amounted to a strike within the meaning of tho Act. Further, as the majority of tho members of the defendant union were parties to. the strike, defendants must be deemed to have instigated it. Judgment would,bo for plaintiff for £50.
