PASSED BY LEGISLATIVE
COUNCIL
WELLINGTON, Juno 1
In, tho Legislative- Council this afternoon the Hon. Sir Francis Bell moved the second reading of tho War Pensions Act Amendment Bill. Ho explained that it v/a-s essentially a money Bill and could not be altered by the Council. 'Che Hon. W. Beehan said paronts should bo given pensions by right, as provided for by clause 9 in the case of a widow. ! Tho Hon. Sir William Hall-Jones re--sferred to the pensions granted to members of the Civil Service, and claimed that men who risked their lives for tho Kinpiro wcero entitled to most favourable consideration. Tho Hon. R. Mooro said that tho Act had. boen considerably widened. .Ho thought that Mr Beehan's suggestion would bo going too far. The Hon. S. Thorne George said hej thought a. scheme of insurance might. have boon arranged to. cover lives of' men while at the war. This would have cost about £1,000,000 ■ for 50,000 men. He considered that'this was a matter that should bo looked into by \ the Government. The Bill was reported from committee without amendment, and road a third timo and passed. At 3.30 p.m. the- Council adjourned until Wednesday next.
