ECHO OF KUT-EL-AMA'RA

AN OFFICER'S SACRIFICE

LONDON, May 28

. Turkish rctports state that Lieutenant H. O. B. Firman, R.N., who was in charge of the ship which attempted to take supplies to Ivut-ei-Amara a few days before the surrender of General Towrishend, was killed.

Lieutenant Firman commanded a gunboat on the Tigris, and cheerfully volunteered to take charge of the forlorn hope.

A message from London on April 28 said: —"The War Office announces that an attempt oh the night of April 24 to send a ship to Kut-cl-Amara with supplies for General Townshend's force, though carried out with the utmost gallantry, unfortunately failed.

"Our aeroplanes discovered the ship aground near Mngasis. about four miles oast of Kut-el-Amnra."

Lieutenant Humphrey tO. R. Firman in January. 191/5, -was first lieutenant in the cruiser Prcserpine.
