FIGHTING WINTER.
GERMAN PREPARATIONS
PETROGRAD, November 22
The Germans are adopting extroardinary' methods to counteract the terrible cold, justifying the' Kaiser's re-pent-.jest in the- t Anny Order that he had abolished-the'Russian winter. The methods adopted include light metal buildings provided with steam heaters and the delivery of \ enormous quantities of spirits with which the soldiers are rubbed all over daily. Field-Mar-shal ivon Hindenburg, in an Army Order, states that the commander who loses a single man through the frost deserves, to be shot. The Germans are collecting vast quantities of calico, linen and other white materials to cover their uniforms,,:, trenches, and supply carte, in the. liiope. that they will be invisible in the snow. They are also using ,a tripod arrangement,'/covered with white, under which, they shelter unseen their aeroplanes.'' The Germans have organ-. ised special' bovine detachments to creep forward in the night and make borings in the frozen ground, which are afterwards exploded, enabling the soldiers to form trenches.
