BRITISH METHODS CONDEMNED.

The "Sunday Times," commenting on an interview with Mr Ashmead Bartlcttj in which ho is enthusiastic about the .wonderful figlrfcing qtialities of the Australians and New Zealandors, says :—" The results of the fighting at Gallipoli ..are highly to ourselves.' Apart from" the conception and doubtful paternity of the expedition, we have committed . every conceivable blunder in the methods of carrying it out. Few of the minds engaged in the enterprise know the Turk's fighting qualities and the geography of his country. The appalling slaughter at Gallipoli will not altogether be in vain. The blood of Australians, New Zealanders, British, and Indians has proved that we are still a great fighting people. Our prestige is higher than before the war, despite this reverse, which is serious. We cannot fulfil the wild promises made to Serbia. As usual, we have been scrupulously fanto our enemies. We warned them in time to be prepared. The Allies ought to have occupied Serbian Macodonin two months ago. Instead, Bulgaria waited until the failure at the Dardanelles was manifest, and then joined Germany. .It is out of the question for the Allies to win a victory in the Balkans this winter. It will require 500,000 men even to win <i victory in the spring. If defeated, the Germans will merely retire to their frontiers, leaving us to keep Bulgaria and Turkey in subjection. The few divisions sent to Salonika can do little. The time has come to seriously reconsider our posl--ticn without self-deception. We should no longer exhaust our resources in an enterprise of ■ secondary importance."
