the new taxation. nki<;d for economy. INCREASE IN LIQUOR AND LUXURIES. LONDON,. October' 14. In the House of Commons the Finance Bill was read a second time.
The Hon. E. S. Montague, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, replying to criticisms, said the Government did not intend to pass more taxation than would pay interest, which, <5n the new debt, would amount to £78,500,000 in March next. The Government had designedly raised the . income tax abatement for children from £20 to. £25, in order to relieve a deserving .class. Every citizen ought to ! be, prepared to place the laafc half of his income .ait the disposal of the State, 'either by loan or tax. W« could only, finance the war for ourselves and our Allies by every class severely stinting itself; yet the consumption of luxuries and alcohol had increased. .. Mr J. A. Bryce declared Jthat the Government.was. the worst offender. There was immense. extravagance and wicked corruption in connection with Government "contracts, but no effort was mado to check the expenditure, of the great departments.
