FIRE TRAGEDY AT FENDALTON.
TWO PEOPLE BURNED TO DEATH
CKRISTCHUJICH, September 22. A very sad fatality occurred at Fen— dalton last night, when an elderly lady and her littlo three-year-old grandchild wore burned to death in a dwell-ing-house on Jdris ilond. The house was owned and occupied by Mrs M. A. Cookson, a widow, and the mother of a fairly large grown-up family. Residing- with her m the bouse was Mr Joseph Cookson, her sonLast evening Mr Joseph Cookson left homo early in. the evening, leaving his mother in the house. When he :returned, shortly after 10 o'clock, it was to find the house ablaze. While the flames wore at their height Mr Fred Freeman, a well-known survey oiy. arrived on'the scene and informed the police that his three-year-old daughter, a granddaughter of Mrs Cookson, was in the house on a visit, that day, and it had been arranged that she* should' spend the' night with her grandmother, as she had frequently done on previous occasions. - . It was then realised for the first time that it was highly probably that human lives had been lost in the conflagration. The remains have not yet been found.
