NEWS AND NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WINCHMORE. At Winchmore on Friday evening last occasion was taken to tender Trooper Hugh McKay a farewell social and presentation. Trooper McKay is leaving with the special reinforcements. Mr J. S. Bland, senior, presided over a large gathering, and in a stirring patriotic speech paid a high tribute to the sterling qualities of Trooper McKay, who always took a keen interest in the welfare of the district. Mr Bland said he was proud of the young ruen of Trooper McKay's stamp coming forward at the Empire's call to defend the homes of thf> young and.old, and [ he assured him. that, they would not be forgotten by those they left behind. Mr Bland then, on behalf of the residents and friends^ presented Trooper j McKay with a gold 'sovereign, ease.'and ; wished him . good-luck arid a safe return-. Trooper McKay, in responding, thanked his friends for the honour done him. During the evening songs were suns?; '.by. Messrs L. Bun?;, E. Til Icy, and Todd. while Mr J.
