FREEZING DISTRICTS.

EXISTING CONDITIONS. . AN EXPERT'S REPORT.— *:■■'-. . (Per-Press,Association). * ■ . • WELLINCTONr August 3. Mr J. Taylor, officer in charge of the Imperial Government Meat Supply branch, in a summarised report upon the conditions existing in the various freezing districts in the Dominion, states, with reference to Canterbury, that since the congestion in freezing stores, due to the drought, was met in June-July by preferential- allocation of insulated space by the New Zealand Overseas Shipowners' Committee, matters have run snioothly. The killing season is expected to cease by the end of August. Increased storage accommodation is being provided for next season, amounting to 220,000 carcases, exclusive of new works, which it is understood Messrs Bbrthwick and Son intend building near .Christchurch, i 'which, however, may not be available ■ for next season. . i

Otago has experienced a fairly aver-' age season, but turnip crops are not as ■ good as last year. A good deal of)' stock has gone back in' consequence of insufficient shipping facilities, and a fall of values has been experienced. In consequence of congestion in the'"freezing works, some apprehension is felt ,at the inroads being made on winter feed, due to the'-carrying_-.for-\yardYof extra stock. The. season ends-in September, a.■i^alHng-bff;lri t killing;is-;'p:i'cdicti2d, .arid ; a poorer iambing' next season. "Additional storage of 200,000 carcases is to be'"provided for next season.

In Southland a good season has been exporience'd during the earlier months, with severe weather in June, which has affected fat lambs. Shipping facilities are considered fairly satisfactory, and prices of stock are well maintained. The season finishes about the end of September. Additions, which will provide space for a further 40,000 carcases, I are being made in time for next season. I
