A WELLINGTON GATHERING.
APPEAL BY ATTORNEY-GENERAL
WELLINGTON, August 4.. - - ; At. the opening: of the Chambers of Commerce- Conference to-day,, -the Hon. A. L.V Herdman, .Attorneyperieral, referred to the anniversary of the declaration of war in New Zealand.. He emphasised the fact. that.the enemy's mercantile marine had been swept from the seas, and that there had been no financial panic .and .no industrial collapse. Viewing the whole situation , : fairly, no man,;>- could . be " otherwise than, satisefid with the wajy things had been managed, considering the magnitude of the task involved. So far as New Zealand was concerned, " the-exports had reached a higher position than ev£r before and the banks were in more ample funds. He made an appeal to all in New Zealand, irrespective of class, quality, or condition, to stand as one man, in true British spirit, while facing the most terrific crisis in the history of the British Empire. The conference passed a resolution expressing loyalty to the Throne and recording its determination to do all in its power to assist the Government in organising and using to the fullest extent all the resources of th« Dominion, and to aid in continuing the war •until"' it is brought to a successful issue: also, expressing admiration ot the gallant work of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces. _ The National Anthem was then sung.
