Ashburton's- commemoration of the anniycrsai y. of the declaration of war followed tin; lines of those held in most other parts of the Dominion, Intercession services' were held in all the churches, a public meeting took place, at which a resolution was carried expressive of the burgesses' determination to continue, tho ' war to a - victorious end, and further intercession services were conducted later" in the day. The children attending the primary schools and tho .Ashburton High School were not granted a holiday,, but the meaning of tho day. was explained to thorn in appropriate addresses. The. ? public building's, business and mercantile houses, and a large number of private residences had "flags flying. Tho Mayor requested the business people of the town to close their premises from 10.30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in order to give their ..employees an ' opportunity, of attending the -intercession- services, andin practically every case this was done.
