CONDITIONS AT TRENTHAM.
REPORT OF THE MEDICAL COMMITTEE.
WELLINGTON, August 1
Tho recommendations of the- medical committee appointed to visit Trehtham \vere placed before the Royal Commission of Inqxiiry to-day by J)r -Elliott:■.-. '■■-■ The doctors'reported that they were not-satisfied: with the accommodation at Trentbani' for infectious: oases; They considered there was need for a change in tho methods of medical:administration and supervision. They were, convinced that men were being sent" out on sick leave who might possibly bo a menace to the health of the ■ community. It was absolutely necessary to appoint a bacteriologist to be in constant touch with the medical officers of tho military hospital. They wore strongly of opinion that a separate hospital staff, was- required' in every large camp, in addition to the regimental and ambulance medical officers. All cases of cerebro-spinal-meningitis, in view of inadequate accommodation for the present cases at Trentham, should be removed, and in yiew of the probable extension ef the epidemic, the doctors recommended that a properlyequipped central fever hospital should be at once arranged for, and that a fully-equipped hospital train for the ! conveyance of sick men should be arranged. These suggestions, it was stated, were not in any sense reflections on the capability and industry of tho medical officers, who, the. committee believed, worked unceasingly' hard, and to the utmost that any medical men can do, to cope with the situation.
