A SERIOUS JOKE.

FORT SENTRY'S SHOT TAKES EFFECT.

WELLINGTON, August 2. About 3 o'clock yesterday morning a man named Beaver was shot in the [shoulder by' a sentry at Fort Dorset.

The authorities are reticent, but it is stated..'that Beaver said he was joking to see if the sentry's rifle was loaded, or if he would use it.

Benver was conveyed to Wellington Hospital.

Beaver's condition is not considered to be serious.
