RED CROSS FUND.

HARE DRIVE AT MAYFIELD

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The organisers of the hare drive held on Friday .at Mayfield may be complimented on tho success that attended their efforts. The day was all that could be desired for the outing, and sportsmen from all parts of the districts of Ruapuna, Anama, and Mayfield entered into the affray with zest and enthusiasm.

The arrangements for the morning drive were that a large area was to be circumvented, and a centre formed at Mcßride's farm, now owned by Mr W. E. Jones. Shooters came in from all directions and met at this particular spot, where a number of ladies had prepared a substantial lunch for the sportsmen. Hares had been particularly plentiful, and everyone was highly satisfied with the first run.

The afternoon's work comprised the encircling of a large area, centreing in one of Mr Morrow's paddocks. The run was finished about 4 p.m., when all gathered in the homestead of Mr A. Harvey,-':wliers afternoon tea was spread. Mr J. Brown, the captain of the day's outing, briefly announced that Mr T. Bennett and himself had undertaken to see that all the hares shot would be disposed' ,of to the best advantage for the Red Cross Fund. He had pleasure in proposing that a hearty vote of thanks be, accorded to Mr A. Harvey and Mr W. E. Jones in allowing the gathering to have lunch and afternoon tea at their respective homesteads. A similar vote was accorded to the ladies for their splendid efforts in providing such substantial refreshments. The votes were carried by acclamation. The number of sportsmen who participated in the drive was 115, and these gave a tally of 435 hares. No .accident of any kind occurred to mar a thoroughly enjoyable day. In tha evening a dance, organised by the young men of the district, resulted (with some subscriptions) in the sum nf £9 15s being realised. Later the following subscriptions were received:—G. H. Sewell. £1, C. W. Withell ss. N. Andersen ss, and — Mcßride ss. All moneys received are to be handed over to the ladies of the Mayfield Red-Cross Society. , /
