MENINGITIS.
THE OASES AT DUNEDIN
OTHERS ISOLATED. ON SUSPICION
PUNEDIN, July 27
:- Of "th^ two recruits on leave from Trentham who reported themselves- at the hospital for medical examination, one was presumably suffering from measles while j-'the other had a sore throat. The -measles patient.... is now supposed to be suffering from a mild attack of cerebro-spinal meningitis. while the other has the germs of the disease in his throat. Both cases have been isolated,. ■ • About 15 other men on, leave from Treniham have called at the hospital for medical examination within the last two days.. Several have been isolated on suspicion. Others havo been passed as free from disease. The suspects. are- being watched by officers of the Health DepartmentSearching investigation in each caso ir ordered. This involves several. days, observation and treatment , in. the laboratory, A . Medical opinion is that a man attacked by the germs of the disease may
I not suffer from anything more than a j sore throat if he is in ordinarily good ! health, and that at the expiry of about .10 days the germs can bo eradicated I from the throat under efficient treat-, ment, the patient regaining his normal health. If, however, his vitality j weakens, the germs may gain the '■ upper hand and the man may then de-, i velop ono of the several forms of the i disoase. • Tho warning should bo emphasised j that during all the time a patient is j carrying the germs in his throat he is a" menace to those,,with whom he comes in immediate contact. ■■■• • The men isolated 'are 1 to be housed on the Hospital Board's property at Wakari.
