OTAGO AFFECTED
Probably many years will elapse before the nor'-westerly gale of Friday night and. Saturday morning will be, forgotten by Ashburton County residents. Reports of damage caused by its vigorous blast that have since been received prove it to have besll one of the most destructive wind storms that has ever been experienced in these parts. ' About . noon on Saturday its force began to abate, and heavy masses of clouds formed up in serried array in the 'south, but unfortunately the promiso of rain did not eventuate. There was, however, heavy rain on the hills, and for a few miles down the foothills and the plains.
A number of farmers who were in town reported that sad havoc had been made in large numbers of the country plantations,-and that scores and scores of well-grown trees had been- blown down in all directions.. In one plantation, for of over five chains, and .for a considerable width, scarcely a tree was left star-fling. ' - In /addition. to- the damage, already reported as haying occurred, gates in various parts of the town were blown off their fastenings, and the framework of a house in course of construction was blown down.
