BRUTAL ASSAULT.
ON AN AUCKLAND GIRL, . j AUCKLAND, May 29. A girl named Gwendoline Leather, returning home about 6 o'clock last night, was assaulted by a man who hit her on the head with an iron spanner. She fell, and her assailant grasped her throat. She screamed, and the man snatched her handbag and bolted. The girl has two scalp woundsj which re T quired 12 stitches, and bears marks on her neck. The vspanner is in the possession of the police, but there is no further clue to the identity of the assailant.
