The Minister of Justice (the Hon. A. L. Herdman) cannot yet make any definite statement regarding the closing of Lyttelton Gaol.' A fish, 1 said to be a frost fish, and measuring 12ft by lft 3in, was found yesterday on the New Brighton beach by Mr J. Clark. As the frost fish is seldom known to exceed a length of four feet, the specimen has aroused great interest. The fish was on exhibition in the city to-day. .

At luncheon-time yesterday a. large black retriever made its way out of a •window on the verandah of i .Messrs Harvey and McDonald's new tailoring shop, in Lower High Street. It tried frantically to get a footing, but its efforts resulted merely in pane after pane of glass being smashed. A great deal of attention was. attracted by the dog's predicament, and many people in, ths crowd that collected volunteered suggestions in jregard to the best means of getting it down. A man went on to an adjoining roof and tried to entice the dog. but wns not pnceessful. Finally the drivor of a van lifted the dog down, and placed it in safety.
