QUARRELSOME WATERSIDERS.
AUCKLAND, March 16. Quarrels botween Arbitrationists and Federationists are of almost daily occurrence in the city, and men are constantly appearing in the Courts charged with breaches of the peace. Two cases were ventilated in the Police Court to-day. Tn one case Thomas Bates, an ex-striker, was charged with assault. It appeared that he met a. man named Hargroaves, an Arbitration ist, and allowed Hargreaves to see a photograph of the- Strike Committee in which he (Bates) figured. Hargreaves remarked disparagingly that it was a wonder the camera didn't break. Bates was so angry that he struck Hargreaves, and the latter promptly retaliated, blackened JJates's eye, knocked him down, and sat on him until a. constable came and took him to the lock-up. Hates complained that the witness who supported • Hargreavcs's statement was biassed against, the old waterside workers, who were victimised men, and were not allowed to live, he complained. The Magistrate sentenced Bates to seven days' imprisonment. In the other case an ex-watersider was found guilty of using obscene language and was fined £2.
