NEW ZEALAND'S NAVY

SYDNEY PRESS COMMENT.

AUSTRALIAN CONTROL NOT

DESIRED

(Per Press Association—Copyright) (Received December 17, 9.20 a.m.) ' SYDNEY, December 17. ' The "Herald" says that "Australians welcome the decision of the New Zealand Government in favour of a New Zealand 'Navy, because it is the only scheme which fits perfectly Australia's ideal of a Pacific Fleet composed of Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, and British sections, but Australians well know that the one thing more than any other which would prejudice the success of the scheme would be any attempt on Australia's part to claim any sort of ascendancy or control over whatever force New Zealand decides upon. , ' , ; > ''If this great scheme is'iever to see the light, Australia and New Zealand must enter as equals. The success of New Zealand's infant project is far too important'for the success of the AngloSaxon races in the Pacific for us to imperil by; any short-sighted claim for ascendancy. ." This is a danger well realised in Australia, and New Zealand need never fear."
