MUNICIPAL ENTERPRISE.

AN ELECTRICAL SUPPLY SHOWROOM,

WELLINGTON, October 1. An important departure has been made by the City Corporation electrical department in opening an up-to-date show-room in Harris Street. This will no doubt become a centre of interest for housewives and others interested in the use of electricity for everyday purposes. The most modern appliances for heating, lighting and general comfort are shown in great variety. The Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke) said that in the opinion of the Council it Was desirable that the people should participate in the benefits of electricity. _ This I was. not only a step in the direction of j greater physical comfort, but was an opportunity for .the development _ of municipal enterprise, which some time ago was not contemplated. The Council was quite justified in co-operating with private enterprise to bring in electrical improvement. He explained that he was not one-of'those who held that the Council should enter intd; air industries in competition with private employers, but private enterprise could be associated with municipal undertakings, the two to work together to further the true interests of the people.
