WATERSIDE WORKERS.
AUCKLAND, February 28. I An understanding of a satisfactory nature has been arrived at in the dispute I>etween the ship-owners and the waterside workers. The position concerning the dispute is a decidedly interesting one. The ship-owners desired an award, but the Waterside Workers' Union declined to negotiate before the Conciliation Council, and refused to. appoint assessors. Thereupon the Conciliation Commissioner appointed three assessors from the Union, and these members decided to meet the employers' representatives before the Conciliation Council. The Union passed a resolution repudiating the assessors acting on their behalf, but this made their position at the Conciliation Council proceedings none the less legal. The Union also decided, by ballot to cancel its registration under the Act, and at once gave notice of its intention to do so. The period of notification required has not expired, hoAvever, and the award arrived at holds good. A complete understanding on all points save that of preference had. this afternoon been arrived at by the Council, the terms accorded the Union being bettor than those granted in any previous award.
