SUGGESTED FEDERATION WITH NEW ZEALAND.
(Received January 12, 10.40 a.m.) HOBART, January 12. The Conference carried a motion that, in the. event of constitutional power being obtained, a national sugar refinery should be established. It also agreed that publicly-owned ironworks were an urgent necessity. It was decided to send a letter of fraternal greetings to the Social Democratic Party in Germany, wishing it success at the elections. - A motion by Mr Fisher, seconded by Mr McGowen, that negotiations for closer industrial and commercial relations with New Zealand should _be opened immediately, was carried. Mr Fisher declared it was well known that trouble in the Pacific would have to be met by all. Australia. They should i sound New Zealand's opinion. _ Mr McGowen said that a! widened federation, by the inclusion of New Zealand, was necessary for the weliare of the States. A motion that State members of Parliament should be eligibly to contest, Federal seats without resigning was carried. = '
